Key Features of Raag Kedar
Kedar consists of both Ma’s and Ni’s.
Ga is an alpa swar and is used only to go to Pa.
Komal Ni is also an alpa swar.
In Kedar, the Teevra Ma and Shuddh Ma are used consecutively even though it is against Hindustani Raag rules.
Some textbooks state the Jati of Kedar as Audav-Shadav because they consider Re and Ga to be absent in the aaroh and Ga to be absent in the avroh. However, if you listen to the raag chalan carefully you will notice the use of all seven notes in a vakra manner. Hence, it can be categorized as a Vakra-Sampoorna jati raag.
Certain phrases from the Kalyan Ang are found in Kedar, which is why it is included in the Kalyan family. Example:
$pdpp su, su n d n @suru su d M $pdpp su
Mood: Expresses beauty, romance, and separation in romance.
Movement of notes: vakra.
