Raag Adana

Raag Adana belongs to the Asawari Family of Raags. Historically, it was associated with the Kafi family due to its use of shuddh Dhaivat, a characteristic still evident in Haveli Sangeet traditions. Watch the video below to learn how Raag Adana compares to Raag Darbari Kanada, Jaunpuri, Megh, and Sughrai.

Raag Adana Introduction

Key Features of Raag Adana

  • Raag Adana is an uttarang pradhan raag. This is evident from the fact that the Vadi Swar is taar Shadaj.

  • The aaroh is very similar to Jaunpuri. The reason it differs from Jaunpuri, is because the komal Gandhar can be used in a specific way in aaroh in Adana (watch the above video for a demonstration).

  • This raag has the kanada ang in it and is considered to be a prakaar of kanada.

  • It also has shades of Raag Megh and Sughrai.

  • The komal Nishad in the ascending is at a slightly higher frequency than usual. A perfect example of this can be heard in the legendary rendition of Mata Kalika by Pt. Jasraj.

  • Mood:  Devotional, playful

  • Movement of notes: vakra in descending phrases, chanchal

  • Tempo: fast
