Raag Miya Malhar
Raag Miya Malhar is a monsoon raag created by Tansen. When we refer to “Miyan Malhar,” the “Miyan” in the name signifies that this particular version of the Malhar raag was created by Tansen, who was honored with the title "Miyan”. It dates back to the 16th century. It belongs to the Kafi family and contains the Kanada ang in it.
Key Features of Raag Miya Malhar:
The movement of this raag is not linear, as reflected in its distinctive aaroh (ascent) and avroh (descent) patterns.
In the aaroh, both the komal Ni and shuddh Ni are sung consecutively, breaking a traditional raag rule. Raags like Lalit also exhibit this unique characteristic.
It is a Poorvaang-pradhaan raag, with its vadi (dominant note) situated in the lower tetrachord, below Ma.
The komal Ga is distinguished by an andolan (a slow oscillation), as demonstrated in the video above.
Miya Malhar has elements of the Kanada ang, with the phrase "N P G M R S" demonstrated in the video.
This raag evokes a wide range of emotions, from powerful and joyous to expressing deep feelings of longing and separation. It beautifully captures the spirit of welcoming the rainy season after a hot summer, celebrating the renewal of life in nature.
